History

Wacker Chemie AG was founded in Germany in October 1914, and has since become a world leader in silicone adhesive production. Wacker engineers developed the first ever large-scale production site of acetaldehyde, acetic acid, and acetone in 1916-1917, and the first large-scale production of acetate and polyvinyl acetate followed in 1928. Production of silicones first began after World War II in 1947, and not twenty years later, the Wacker Chemical Corporation was founded in New York in 1965, with vinyl acetate/ethylene-based copolymers going into production the very next year.

Wacker has continued to grow over the last fifty years. Wacker Siltronic Corporation was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1978, followed by Wacker Chemicals East Asia Ltd. in Tokyo in 1983, and Wacker Silicones Corporation in Adrian, Michigan in 1987. Wacker is now comprised of five main divisions. In 2011, the company received the Frost & Sullivan Europe’s New Product Innovation Award in Construction Sealants for the Geniosil® a-STP-E product range. The company celebrated its 100th birthday in October 2014, and they are continuing to lead the way in sales and quality production today.
