Picking the right structural adhesive is about more than choosing the product with the highest bond strength. Adhesives can have vastly different properties that can affect their performance. Even minor differences in capabilities and properties between similar products can have serious real-world implications.
With over 50 years of experience in the adhesives industry, our team understands how these small differences can have a significant impact on your manufacturing. We compare two similar adhesives, SCIGRIP SG100 and SCIGRIP SG200, to help you determine which one is right for your needs.
About SCIGRIP SG100
The SCIGRIP SG100 adhesives are a series of two-component methacrylates with 10:1 mix ratios that can be used for a wide range of structural applications. The series includes two adhesives that vary in their working times to meet the needs of different applications. SG100-15 provides a working time of approximately 12 to 18 minutes, while SG100-40 offers a working time of approximately 35 to 45 minutes under standard conditions.
Both adhesives stand out for their UV resistance and bright white color, which make them well suited for applications where the bond line remains visible and is exposed to sunlight. The SG100 methacrylates also feature a non-sag formulation for vertical applications and can bond to a variety of composites, metals, and thermoplastics.
Other key properties of the SCIGRIP SG100 adhesives include:
- Permanent toughness
- Impact resistance
- Fatigue resistance
- GREENGUARD-certified for low chemical emissions
About SCIGRIP SG200
The SCIGRIP SG200 adhesives are a series of 10:1 methacrylate adhesives with different working times that are designed primarily for structural bonding applications. The working time for SG200-10 is approximately 8 to 12 minutes, while the working time for SG200-20 is approximately 17 to 22 minutes, and the working time for SG200-40 is 35 to 45 minutes. This wide range allows manufacturers to choose an adhesive that best matches their production process needs.
Commonly used in the marine and transportation industries, the SCIGRIP SG200 series offers excellent chemical and environmental resistance. It can bond a range of plastics, metals, and composites, typically without the need for extensive surface preparation.
Other key properties of the SCIGRIP SG200 MMAs include:
- Non-sag formulations
- Permanent toughness
- High elongation

Both the SCIGRIP SG100 and SG200 adhesives are methacrylates with a 10:1 mix ratio that manufacturers use primarily for structural bonding. They also have overlapping substrate compatibility, the same service temperature range, and typically do not require extensive surface preparation.
The differences between SCIGRIP SG100 and SG200 are tied to their specific performance capabilities, and the right choice for your application will depend on your priorities and requirements.
UV Resistance
One of the biggest differences between the SG100 and SG200 methacrylate adhesives is related to UV resistance. SG100 offers excellent UV resistance and comes in a bright white color. It is well suited for applications with visible bond lines or ultraviolet-light exposure. On the other hand, SCIGRIP SG200 does not mention UV resistance in its product specifications. If appearance or long-term color stability is important, SG100 is likely the better choice.
Working and Fixture Times
While both product lines offer a range of working and fixture times, the SG200 series offers more choices. It features three different adhesives with working times of 8 to 12 minutes, 17 to 22 minutes, and 35 to 45 minutes. The SG100 series does not offer the fastest-working formula, as it provides only ranges of 12 to 18 minutes and 35 to 45 minutes.
The fixture-time options follow a similar pattern. The SG200 adhesives offer ranges of 25 to 30 minutes, 35 to 42 minutes, and 80 to 90 minutes. The SCIGRIP SG100 series has fixture times of 35 to 45 minutes and 80 to 100 minutes. Make sure the working time and fixture time match your production needs.
Strength and Flexibility
Other important differences between SCIGRIP SG100 and SG200 are their performance capabilities. According to the technical datasheets, the SG200 series has slightly higher tensile and lap shear strength ranges than the SG100 series, but the ranges do overlap. SCIGRIP SG200 also has a lower tensile modulus than the SG100 adhesives, so it showed a less rigid response during tensile testing. SCIGRIP describes SG200 as offering excellent fatigue, impact, and shock-load resistance, so it is often well suited for assemblies requiring high strength while also experiencing vibration or movement.
How to Choose Between SG100 and SG200 Adhesives
Choosing between the SCIGRIP SG100 and SG200 series of methacrylates should involve an evaluation of your application and manufacturing requirements. Use the following steps to narrow your options.
- Review the performance requirements. SG200 provides somewhat higher tensile and lap shear strength ranges, while SG100 has a higher tensile modulus and maximum elongation range. Determine which product’s specifications match your requirements.
- Think about environmental conditions. SG100 is designed with excellent UV resistance, while SG200 highlights general environmental and chemical resistance.
- Evaluate the substrates and preparation process. Both products can bond compatible metals, composites, and thermoplastics, and they typically do not require a lot of surface preparation. Always confirm substrate compatibility and surface preparation requirements with the technical datasheet.
- Determine whether appearance matters. If you need a bright white adhesive, SG100 may be the right choice. SG200 is an option when the off-white color will not affect the finished product.
- Match the working time to your assembly. Both series offer multiple working times to help you narrow down your selection to a particular adhesive within the series.
- Consider dispensing volume. A 490 mL cartridge is often suitable for repairs, prototypes, and lower-volume production. 5-gallon pails or 50-gallon drums are better for higher-volume lines.
Choose SCIGRIP SG100 over SG200 when UV resistance, a bright white color, or the appearance of a visible bond line is a primary requirement.
Choose SCIGRIP SG200 over SG100 for applications that require high lap shear strength, toughness, and resistance to fatigue, impact, or shock loads. It is most common in plastic assembly and structural applications in the marine and transportation industries.
While this information should help you determine which product is best for your needs, testing is still recommended. Trials under your real conditions can highlight differences that published data may not reveal.
