An In-Depth Review of Loctite 4090 Hybrid Adhesive
Few things are worse than having an amazing idea but not being able to bring it to life due to the limitations of the materials and technology you have at your disposal. With the line of Universal Structural Bonders from Loctite, you’ll never have to worry about that again.
The Loctite 4090 Hybrid Adhesive is a combination of cyanoacrylate glue and epoxy that is durable, water-resistant, and capable of filling gaps of up to 5mm (roughly 3/16”). Combining the speed of instant adhesives with the durability and strength of structural adhesives, it is extremely versatile and can be used in more ways and for more applications than you ever imagined possible.
Benefits of Loctite HY 4090
Loctite HY 4090 is a hybrid adhesive that offers the versatility, speed, and performance to solve a range of assembly challenges. It cures faster than most other epoxy adhesives and offers strong bonding on a vast array of substrates. It can be used to bond metals, as well as most plastics and rubbers, and is appropriate for adhering dissimilar materials. One company uses it to bond acrylic to aluminum when manufacturing signs and displays.
With a fixture time of fewer than 5 minutes, Loctite HY 4090 reduces production time. It is non-corrosive and non-flammable, which results in improved safety and health for workers who use it. It offers good impact, moisture, chemical, and temperature (up to 150 degrees Celsius), and it is even ISO 10993 compliant, making it suitable for use in the assembly of disposable medical equipment.
General Usage Instructions
To ensure a strong, lasting bond, it is important to use Loctite HY 4090 correctly. Before applying, all bond areas must be thoroughly cleaned. Use a Loctite cleaning solvent to remove grease and other debris, and let it dry.
When using Loctite HY4090, Part A and Part B must be blended. The product may be applied directly to the bond areas, however, by using the mixer head supplied with the dual cartridge. If you are using a 50g dual cartridge, stand it upright for one minute. Insert it into the dispenser while keeping it in an upright position. Carefully remove the cap, and dispense a small amount of the product to make sure that both sides are flowing freely and evenly. Once this has been confirmed, attach the mixing nozzle.
If you are using a 400g dual cartridge, the process also begins with standing it upright for one minute. Next, remove both the cap and the locking ring. Attach the mixing nozzle, then secure it in place with the locking ring. Load the cartridge into the application gun with the yellow label visible above the nozzle. Hold the applicator at a 45-degree angle with the tip pointing up, and begin dispensing until the adhesive reaches the nozzle tip.
After installing and testing the cartridge, dispense a bead that is roughly as long and as wide as the mixing nozzle. Examine it to ensure that the product is being mixed sufficiently, then discard.
Apply the product to one of the surfaces you need to bond. Immediately attach the other piece. Hold fixed or apply a clamp until the adhesive has fixtured. During cure time, prevent the assembled parts from moving. Allow the bond to develop full strength before subjecting it to any service load. While the exact cure and fixture times may vary based on the substrates used, the gap size, and other factors, the average fixture time is 180 seconds, and the full cure time is 168 hours.
Loctite Universal Structural Bonders, like Loctite HY 4090, are designed to provide dependability, durability, and exceptional bond strength when adhering a wide range of materials, including metal, rubber, and certain types of plastic. It’s also appropriate for multiple surface bonding, magnet bonding, and composite bonding.
By combining epoxy and cyanoacrylate, the product offers the speed of a super glue with the strength and durability of an epoxy. It cures faster and performs better than many traditional epoxy adhesives and is a revolutionary product that can be used in a wide range of industries. From bonding pieces of metal that are too thin to weld to adhering different types of plastic together, Loctite HY 4090 offers unbeatable versatility in a unique hybrid adhesive.
