Common Questions About Epoxy Guns

An epoxy gun is a handheld applicator used to dispense adhesives. These adhesives are commonly sold in dual-component cartridges that need to be mixed at the time of application. Dual epoxy guns work similarly to caulk guns – pressing the trigger pushes a plunger within each barrel of the cartridge, squeezing both components out, through a mixing nozzle, and onto the surface.

An epoxy gun dispenses structural adhesives from cartridges. Hot melt glue guns are designed to dispense solid hot glue sticks. Hot glue sticks are typically for lower-strength and faster-setting bonds than structural adhesives.

Epoxy adhesive guns are designed to work with standard cartridge sizes, so check your cartridge size. The most common cartridge sizes are 50mL, 200mL, 400mL, and 600mL. Some products may show slightly more or less by volume. For example, 45mL = 50mL cartridge, 250mL = 200mL cartridge, and 490mL = 400mL cartridge.

You will also want to match the epoxy gun’s ratio capability to the adhesive’s ratio (e.g., 1:1 or 2:1). You can check the product specs for these details.

No. Many epoxy guns are designed to work specifically with 1:1/2:1, 4:1, or 10:1 mix ratios. Some epoxy cartridge guns do come with multi-ratio adapters that allow you to use the same gun with different mix ratios. Check your adhesive cartridge to determine the mix ratio before choosing an epoxy gun.

Manual epoxy glue guns are operated by applying pressure to the trigger, similar to a caulk gun. They don't use electricity and don't require batteries. If you're applying adhesive for many hours, squeezing the trigger can get tiring. Precise application can also be more challenging.

Pneumatic epoxy guns attach to an air compressor for assistance. This design provides more comfort and more precise dispensing. They are commonly used in product assembly, including automotive assembly, where large amounts of adhesive are used.
